Just like with the FHL, I am providing you with a short over view of the SPHL. This is just a few key points before I start going in-depth.

The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) is a professional ice hockey league based in Huntersville, North Carolina, with teams located in the southeastern United States and Illinois.

  • The SPHL is a combination of three previous leagues that were not able to stay together.
  • The SPHL was started in time for the 2004-2005 season.
  • In 2009, the SPHL saw a large expansion in Biloxi, Mississippi, Lafayette, Louisiana and Pensacola, Florida.
  • In 2010, the league added an expansion team in Augusta, Georgia.
  • For the 2011–12 season, the league added the Mississippi River Kings.
  • For the 2013–14 season, the league expanded with two franchises in Illinois: the Bloomington Thunder, and the Peoria Rivermen.

The Augusta Riverhawks did not compete in the 2013-2014 season, and it was recently decided that the franchise would move to Macon, Georgia for the 2015-2016 season and will be named the Macon Mayhem.

The Mississippi Surge & Bloomington Thunder will not be part of the SPHL this season. The Surge has ceased operations for any given amount of time, and the Thunder is now part of the United States Hockey League.

The current champions are the Pensacola Ice Flyers who are holding back to back Presidents Cup titles. They are looking to win it again this season, becoming the first team to ever win the title for three consecutive years. The Knoxville Ice Bears, however, have three Presidents Cup titles. Their first win was one season before their back to back wins.
